Saskatchewan Memories shared for Janet's 70th Birthday

The Taylors: It was 1959 and Tom Hill, as a new constable, was boarding with us while stationed in elbow, Saskatchewan. Central Butte was only 28 miles away and Tom and his buddies would often find themselves at the hospital there looking for a hot meal - of course, the attractive young nurses were a bit of a draw as well. It didn't take long before Tom started talking about one particular nurse and often borrowed Bob's brand new '59 Chev to pick her up on their dates. One Saturday night we threw ourselves a party and Tom brought along Janet. We can't be sure alcohol was a factor but at some point during the evening, Tom's uniform spurs wound up on Janet's feet. While prancing and jingling about outside it came to Janet's attention that she was lacking one of the spurs. Panic ensued. It did eventually turn up but I suspect Tom kept a close eye on his uniform in the presence of Janet. Happy Birthday Janet! The Taylors Phyl and Gerry: When we lived in Central Butte from 1959-1962 your mom worked at the Central Butte Hospital and lived in the Nurses' Residence. We lived in a small house on the south side of the street opposite the hospital and Nurses' Residence. One incident we recall was a time when your ever-popular Mom was being pursued by one of the local bachelors. You Mom came and knocked on our back door quickly saying, “I can’t stay” and then as quickly went through the house and out the north front door to escape to the Nurses' Residence. A few minute later her pursuer knocked on the door asking if Janet was there and Phyl said "NO" and once again Janet had made an escape. Jan has been a very good friend since she and I and the rest of our nursing class of '54 trained together under very strict conditions. We also met your dad, Tom, when we were in Central Butte and it's been great to have known your folks all this time. Have a Happy Special Day with your Mom. Love, Phyl and Gerry Dorothy and Bill Picton : Thank you for including us in this celebration of your Mom's birthday. Memories abound but one of the best was meeting her about 1960 in Saskatoon. Sharing the joys of raising children - and husbands! Janet liked to have coffee parties. All of us with tiny children and if we were lucky we may have owned one decent pair of slacks that fit. One friend of us all showed up wearing a beautiful green dress and white gloves. I'm sure she soon realized she was a bit overdressed for us. Tom bringing Roy Gislason home at any hour expecting to be fed. Janet always found something for a sandwich. I vowed many years ago to never tell her secret - so Tom you will always wonder!!! We have shared many laughs, great concern about our children's health and a few tears but in spite of distance, our friendship has prevailed. Tom and Bill were troop mates or we may never have met. Happy Birthday dear friend. We do wish we could be there to celebrate with you all. Much Love,
Dorothy and Bill Picton The Fosters: Janet and Tom Hill go back a long way with respect to the Foster family. It was in January of 1961 when Eileen came home from work and said, "I am working with a really neat lady, and 1 think you would like her. Her husband is a Mountie." Our relationship went on from there. Your mother was a great deal of comfort to Eileen with her approach to cancer. When Eileen died we had many floral wreaths at the house. It was decided that only one would be taken to the cemetery. Our children, without hesitation, selected the one from the Hills "because of all the good times we had with the Hills". Your mother became a second mother to our Tom when he worked at Expo and Whistler. 1 suppose this mayor may not have been with the full approval of the Hill family as Tom has a reasonable appetite. 1 am so pleased that the Hill family are able to celebrate your mother's 39th• Very best of wishes to Janet on this occasion. Love from the Fosters Shirley and Des Cunnin : Thinking about your Mom gives me pleasure for a number of reasons, but especially when it comes to cats, Siamese cats. I yearned for a Siamese cat, but in those early years in P A it would have been an extravagance to acquire. Through the generosity of Janet and our mutual friend Mary Belyea, they gifted me with a kitten from their joint litter. We had FooLing for 17 years and she made such an impression on our family that two of the families have three each. I remember a time when I said I wanted to come back as a cat, a Siamese cat, and Janet shared that idea. We don't see each other very often these days, but hope we won't have to wait until our feline spirits unite. Something else that comes to mind is the Dagoli line of clothing. Our kindred spirits have both of us wearing these comfortable, special garments. Janet got me connected to the factory and I now receive a catalogue, which I'm forever sharing with folks who admire whatever piece I'm wearing. All I have to do is think about many an hour at the bridge table wherein Des and Tom didn't have as much fun as Janet and I did. Now I (Des) remember the night we stayed over at your place in West Van with our 5 kids on our way to the Island for Christmas, and were enjoying a game of bridge plus the spectacular lights of Grouse Mountain and just maybe an odd drink of rum, when the sewer backed up in the basement. Janet - would it be fair to say that you didn't get too excited, you just wanted to know who's deal it was? Have a great celebration and thanks for remembering us! Shirley and Des Cunnin
